Cat Café vs. Cat Lounge: What's the Difference?

They sound alike, but a cat lounge and a cat café are built around different ideas. Here is what sets them apart and what that means for your visit.

"Cat café" is the phrase most people search, so it is how many people find us. But CatLands calls itself a cat lounge, and that is on purpose. Here is the difference.

The cat café idea

Cat cafés started as cafés first. You come for coffee and a snack, and cats share the space. Food and drinks are a big part of the visit, and many cafés separate the eating area from the cat room for health and safety.

The cat lounge idea

In a cat lounge, the cats are the main attraction. The room is designed around them: plenty of height, hideaways, scratching spots and places to nap. Guests book a timed visit, settle in and spend their time with the residents. Visits are capped so the room stays calm.

At CatLands we describe it as a cozy boutique hotel experience with some very adorable four-legged residents.

What that means for your visit

Adoption is the heart of it

Both cat cafés and cat lounges often partner with rescues. At CatLands, adoption is the reason we exist. Every resident will be adoptable through Homeward Trails Animal Rescue, and seeing cats relaxed in a home-like room helps people find the right match. Here is how adopting works.

So which one is CatLands?

A cat lounge. If you searched for a cat café in Gaithersburg, Rockville or anywhere in Montgomery County, you are in the right place. We are at 375 Main St in Kentlands, opening December 2026.
