Gray weather does not have to mean another afternoon on the couch. Here are some of our favorite indoor things to do in and around Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Coming in December: CatLands Lounge

Of course we are going to mention this one. CatLands Lounge opens at 375 Main St in Kentlands in early December 2026: a warm, cozy room full of free-roaming rescue cats. You will book a 50-minute session, find a cushion and let the cats decide who gets the attention. It will be calm enough for adults who need a breather and gentle enough for families with kids who can sit and wait for a cat to come over.

Session booking opens with the lounge. Join the opening list to hear the date first.

See art and theater at the Arts Barn

The Arts Barn in Kentlands has rotating art exhibits, working studios for resident artists and a 99-seat theater. It is a great choice for a slow afternoon.

Learn some local history

The Gaithersburg Community Museum in Olde Towne has local history exhibits and kid-friendly activities. It keeps set hours several days a week, so check before heading over.

Get creative

Downtown Crown has a pottery and mosaic studio where kids and adults can make something to take home, plus a children's gym for burning off energy.

Catch a movie at Rio

Rio Lakefront's movie theater and restaurants make for an easy rainy evening, and if the weather clears you can walk around the lake afterward.

Plan ahead for an event

Once open, CatLands is planning cat yoga, trivia and bingo nights and family programming. When rain is in the forecast, these are a great reason to get out of the house. Watch our events page and join the newsletter on our homepage to hear about new dates first.
